The Poster on the Community Board

Level: beginner

Tara is 29 and works in a small hair salon. On Monday morning, she walks to the before work. She likes to look at the board near the door. People put posters there for classes, events, and help. One new catches her eye. It says, “Neighborhood Clean-Up, Saturday 10 a.m.” The picture shows gloves and big bags. Tara feels interested, but also a little . She is new in this area, and she does not know many people. She takes a photo of the poster and sends it to her brother. He answers, “You should go. It is a good way to meet people.” Tara smiles, but her stomach still feels tight. On Saturday, the sky is gray and the air is cool. Tara arrives at the community center and sees about fifteen people. Some talk easily, like they already know each other. Tara stands near the wall and holds her phone. She feels . A tall man with a bright jacket walks over. “Hi, I’m Daniel,” he says. “Is this your first time?” “Yes,” Tara says. “I’m Tara. I live on Pine Street.” Daniel nods. “Great. We can work together if you want.” Tara is relieved. They get gloves, and a gives them bags and a simple map. They walk to a small park. At first, they pick up cups and paper in silence. Then Daniel points at a broken bench. “I hate seeing this,” he says. “Kids sit here.” Tara looks closer. The bench is loose and one piece is missing. She says, “Maybe we can tell the city office. Or the center can report it.” Daniel shrugs. “People report things all the time. Nothing happens.” His voice sounds frustrated. Tara thinks for a moment. She is not sure what to say, but she wants to try. “Maybe… if we write it down today, with a clear photo, it feels more serious,” she says. Daniel looks at her, surprised. “That’s a good idea.” They take a photo and write a short note for the . Tara’s hands shake a little, but she keeps going. After that, they work faster. They find old bottles near the bushes, and they carry a heavy bag together. At noon, everyone meets back at the center. The organizer thanks the group and offers water and fruit. Tara feels tired, but happy. Daniel smiles at her. “So, will you come again?” Tara laughs softly. “Yes. Next time I won’t hide near the wall.” When she walks home, the street looks the same, but she feels different. She feels like she belongs here a little more.
